Jeere Meere Varan

Varan refers to traditional Maharashtrian lentil-based dishes, served as a side dish for rice. This is a homely and satiating treat that you will thoroughly enjoy when had with a bowl of hot rice.






Ingredients


1 cup toor dal

1/4 cup moong dal

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 tsp hing/ asafoetida powder

2-3 Kokum petals

Salt to taste

Chopped coriander leaves


To be ground:

4 fresh coconut scrapings

3-4 green chillies

1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds

4-5 peppercorns(meere)

4-5 garlic cloves

little daniya patta/ coriander leaves

Grind the above ingredients into a fine paste and keep aside


For the tempering:

3 tsp oil

1 tsp mustard

curry leaves

1 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds

little haldi/ turmeric powder




Procedure

  • Wash the dal and soak in 2 cups water for 15 mins, pressure cook with hing,haldi for 3-4 whistles

  • Heat oil in a pan, add the tempering ingredients, once it is fried add the masala and fry till the raw smell goes

  • Add cooked dal, water, salt, sugar, and water to adjust the consistency

  • Add the kokum petals and make it boil for 5 mins

  • Garnish with daniya patta and serve hot with rice.
