Varan refers to traditional Maharashtrian lentil-based dishes, served as a side dish for rice. This is a homely and satiating treat that you will thoroughly enjoy when had with a bowl of hot rice.

Ingredients
1 cup toor dal
1/4 cup moong dal
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp hing/ asafoetida powder
2-3 Kokum petals
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves
To be ground:
4 fresh coconut scrapings
3-4 green chillies
1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
4-5 peppercorns(meere)
4-5 garlic cloves
little daniya patta/ coriander leaves
Grind the above ingredients into a fine paste and keep aside
For the tempering:
3 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard
curry leaves
1 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds
little haldi/ turmeric powder
Procedure
Wash the dal and soak in 2 cups water for 15 mins, pressure cook with hing,haldi for 3-4 whistles
Heat oil in a pan, add the tempering ingredients, once it is fried add the masala and fry till the raw smell goes
Add cooked dal, water, salt, sugar, and water to adjust the consistency
Add the kokum petals and make it boil for 5 mins
Garnish with daniya patta and serve hot with rice.
