Konkani Style Karate Batate Puddi Sagl is a simple and delicious Konkani-style bitter-gourd side dish that uses a lot of coconuts to make this dish. Bitter gourd is one of the vegetables not preferred by many. However, the freshly prepared spice mix along with grated coconut adds a wonderful flavor. Serve it along with Horse gram stew and steamed rice.
Ingredients
1 medium kaarate / bitter gourd / karela
5 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard
1 sprig of curry leaves
Salt to taste
For the masala paste:
3/4 cup grated coconut
Chickpea size tamarind
In 1 tsp oil fry 2 tsp urad dal, 1 tsp coriander seeds, 5 methi seeds, and 4 red chillies
Grind the above ingredients into a semi coarse masala paste adding water and keep aside
Procedure
Wash and cut karela into 4 lengthwise and cut into pieces
Add 1/2 tsp salt and keep aside for 30 mins. After 30 mins squeeze water from the karela and deep fry it till they turn brown and crisp
In a pan heat oil, add mustard. Once it starts crackling add curry leaves, ground masala, and fry the masala well for 5-10 mins
Now add in the fried karela pieces, toss well and cook for 5 mins
Turn off the flame and serve hot with rice and dal.
