Khara bhaat or Rava Bhaat is a breakfast from Karnataka made with semolina, veggies and some spices. It is a variation of the most popular rava upma. Most people love this for the subtle flavour that comes from the vangi Bhaat powder that is used in this.
Ingredients
1/2 cup upma rava/semolina sooji (roasted)
2 tbsp ghee/oil
Curry leaves
1 tsp mustard
1 tsp urad dal
1 tsp chana dal
10 cashew cut into pieces
1 onion finely chopped
2 slit green chillies
1/4 inch chopped ginger
1 tomato finely chopped
1/4 capsicum chopped
1/2 carrot chopped
2 tbsp green peas
Salt to taste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder/Haldi
1 tsp vangi bhaat powder
1.5 cups water
2 tbsp coconut gratings
2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
1 tsp lemon juice
Procedure
Dry roast rava on low flame until it turns aromatic. keep aside.
In a large kadai heat ghee and splutter mustard, urad dal, chana dal, cashew and few curry leaves.
Add chopped onion and saute until it shrinks slightly.
Further add ginger, slit green chillies , and saute well.
Now add chopped tomato and saute until tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
Also add capsicum, carrot, peas and salt.
Stir fry for 2 minutes or until veggies are cooked yet crunchy.
Furthermore add turmeric powder, vangi bath masala powder and saute until spices turn aromatic.
Pour 1½ cup water and give a good stir. Bring to a rolling boil.
Keeping the flame on low start adding roasted rava slowly, stirring continuously in another hand.
This helps to prevent any lumps formation.Now mix continuously till the rava absorbs water.
Cover and simmer on low flame for 5 minutes or till upma is cooked well.
Turn off the flame and add coconut gratings, Chopped coriander, lemon juice. Mix well.
Finally, serve khara bath with coconut chutney, rava kesari or plain.
