Matodi Palya / Matwadi Palya

Updated: Feb 24, 2022

Matodi Palya is basically a dry stir fry made from soaked lentils with a choice of veggies in it. It is common in Brahmin’s home. In this recipe, I have used raw bananas. Tastes awesome with rice and dal or rasam.

Ingredients

1 raw banana/baalekayi

4 tsp oil

1 tsp mustard

1 tsp urad dal

1 sprig of curry leaves

1 dry red chilli

Salt to taste

1 tsp lemon juice

For the masala paste:

3 tbsp coconut gratings

1/4 cup chana dal (soaked in water for 30 minutes)

2 green chillies

1/2 tsp turmeric / Haldi powder

1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds

2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

Make a coarse paste, without water and keep it aside.

Procedure

  • Wash and peel the banana and cut it into small cubes, put in the water to avoid turning brown.

  • Heat oil in the pan, add mustard. Once it starts crackling, add curry leaves, red chilli, urad dal. Saute for a second.

  • Add chopped banana, salt to taste. Add 1/4 cup water and cook with a lid covered.

  • Once the banana is cooked 80% add the ground masala paste.

  • Give a good mix and cook further till the banana cooks well.

  • add the lemon juice and mix again. Turn off the flame.

  • Serve hot with rice and dal.
