Tomato thokku is a simple and easy recipe and I finished making it pretty soon. You can serve it as a side condiment with any South Indian meal. It also tasted great with the dal khichdi, that I had made. You could have tomato thokku with idli, dosa or even just plain bread or plain boiled rice.
Ingredients
1 kg tomato
150 gms tamarind (cleaned)
1/4 ltr Til /Sesame oil
200 gms red chilli powder
2 pods garlic (cleaned)
1/4 tsp Fenugreek/methi seeds
4 tbsp mustard
1 tsp turmeric powder
100 gms powdered salt
Procedure
Wash and wipe the tomatoes and chop finely.
Dry roast methi seeds and mustard. Powder it and keep it aside.
Heat oil in a pan and boil till the smoke comes.
Add peeled garlic cloves.
Fry till garlic becomes light brown. Add chopped tomatoes and fry till the raw smell disappears or for around 15 minutes.
Then add the tamarind pulp, salt, and turmeric powder. Mix well.
Fry till oil floats on top (For another 15 minutes)
Lastly, add Mustard and fenugreek powder and simmer for 5 minutes.
Turn off the flame and let it cool.
Store in an airtight glass container once it comes to room temperature.
Enjoy with hot rice, dosa, or idli.
