Vanpayar Vazhaipoo Thoran is a simple, healthy nutritious Kerala style stir fry prepared with banana flower. This makes an awesome combination with rice and Vathakulambu or Kara Kuzhambu. In Kerala, most of the houses will have banana trees in their backyard. Bananas, ripened or raw, the flower, the stem, everything is used for cooking. That is why this thoran brings nostalgic memories to many Keralites outside Kerala. It is highly nutritious and power-packed with all vitamins, fibres and proteins. This thoran is very easy to prepare with the easily available ingredients in your kitchen.
Ingredients
1 Banana flower
5 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard
2 tsp urad dal
1 sprig curry leaf
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 broken red chilli
For the masala paste:
1/4 grated fresh coconut
2 tsp red chilli powder
5 garlic cloves
1 tsp cumin seeds
Grind these into a coarse masala and keep aside
Procedure
Peel the banana flower stalk (each layer will have all flowers)Remove the outer layers, till you find no more flowers, and the remaining part should be chopped finely
Put the chopped flower in water,add2 tblsp curds and keep for 1 hr
Drain water,squeeze the chopped flower and keep aside
In a pan heat oil , add the tempering ingredients and fry
Put the chopped flower, salt and cook with a lid covered
When it is almost cooked,add the masala and cook for 5 mins
Serve hot with rice
